About Buffalo
Buffalo is more than just snow. We are one of America 's best-kept secrets - with the perks of a big city, but a small city feel. Our area has a population of over one million, yet everything is "about ten minutes away" by car, and traffic jams are rare.
Buffalo is a city of neighborhoods. Walk down the Elmwood strip for hip clothing stores and exceptional restaurants for every taste. Just down the street is the nationally known Albright Knox Art Gallery , which is walking distance from the Historical Museum and the beautiful Olmstead Park system . You can go to the Village of Williamsville for a stroll down Main Street lit up for the holidays. If you truly love architecture, there are the old Victorian homes in Allentown and of course multiple architectural gems including several Frank Lloyd Wright designs. Then if you get tired of the states, you can shoot over to Toronto - just a ninety minute drive away.
If you're a sports fan: you are in the right place. In the summer, you can catch a Buffalo Bisons' baseball game at Dunn Tire Park . Spend a great night rooting for the home team and munching on hot dogs. It is affordable enough to bring the whole family. In the winter, the HSBC arena has the National Hockey League Buffalo Sabres vying for the Stanley cup, and of course the National Football League Buffalo Bills take the field at Ralph Wilson Stadium every fall.
If you are more of a culture buff, there is the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra for an evening of classical music, pops or opera. And Buffalo is a theater lover's dream. You can catch a play just about anywhere downtown: Studio Arena , I rish Classical Theatre , Kavinoky Theatre , the Jewish Repertory Theatre , Alleyway Theatre , the Theatre of Youth , Shea's Performing Arts Center , MusicalFare , Ujima , or Shakespeare in the Park over the summer. A complete listing of current theatre and other entertainment offerings is available in the Gusto section of the Buffalo News each Friday. If you still haven't had enough theater, you can try the Summer Festivals at the Shaw Festival or Stratford Festival in Canada.
Summertime in Buffalo is full of outdoor festivals like the Allentown Art Festival and Elmwood Avenue Festival of the Arts . For your palate there's the Taste of Buffalo , Italian Festival , Hellenic Festival , and Chicken Wing Festival just to name a few. Every week there is a free Thursday at the Square , with nationally known and local music groups performing.
And for nature lovers, Buffalo is the perfect spot in any season. In the winter, take off cross-country or downhill skiing at Holiday Valley or Kissing Bridge . Or try snow-shoeing if you like. Take a breathtaking autumn walk through Letchworth State Park or go camping at Alleghany State Park . You can go sailing in Youngstown , or if you like the beach, try Sunset Bay or Crystal Beach. There's nothing like a hike through Zoar Valley in the springtime. Or take a bike ride along the Niagara River . Birdwatch at Tift Nature Preserve or Beaver Meadow . There are literally too many nature spots to name in one paragraph - entire books have been written on hiking in Western New York .
Buffalo is a terrific spot to raise a family. There are good public and private schools, as well as several colleges. There are plenty of ways to spend the weekend with your family. You can hit the Zoo , the Science Museum or Explore and More Children's Museum . Rochester 's nationally known Children's Museum is just over an hour away.
But more important than the places of Buffalo , are the people of Buffalo . USA Today voted us the "city with the biggest heart," and we couldn't agree more. Welcome to our community!
